ASUU UNIABUJA Suspends Strike

The University of Abuja chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended the industrial action embarked upon by its members following an agreement with the new Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

Lecturers of UNIABUJA had been on strike for six (6) weeks following several disagreements between the union and the former Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor James Adelabu and what it called “Federal Government’s refusal to release the White Paper containing issues affecting the institution”.

Announcing the suspension of the strike, the UniAbuja branch chairman of ASUU, Mr Ben Ugheoke, said that the recall of students to the campus was a decision to be made by the University Senate.

He added that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Micheal Adikwu signed an agreement with the union which involves the release of the White Paper, and that the Vice-Chancellor has assured the union that he would work towards ensuring its release.

Industrial Court Barred UNIABUJA New VC From Office

Professor Micheal Adikwu the newly appointed Vice-ChancellorDrama of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), has been barred from assuming office by the industrial court.

An ex-parte order signed by the president of the Industrial Court, Justice B.A. Adejumo, was issued yesterday, following an application by a university lecturer, Dr. Raji Rasheed, and two others who alleged that there were irregularities during the appointment of the new VC by the governing council.

The applicants asked the court to restrain Adikwu from parading himself as the Vice Chancellor, pending the determination of the motion on notice.

The lecturers alleged that eight out of the 13-member Governing Council of the university elected Prof. Adikwu as Vice Chancellor despite the fact that he came third in the screening process.

However, members of the labour unions in the university have endorsed the new VC distancing themselves from the purported suit from some lecturers.

New UNIABUJA VC Receive Endorsements From Staff Unions

The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), Professor Michael Umale Adikwu have received several endorsements by the staff unions of the university who stated that the governing council did not flout any known law in the appointment of the vice chancellor.

The UniAbuja chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Ben Ugheoke, who broke led the endorsements, said that the unions had already written the governing council and other relevant authorities conveying their readiness to cooperate and work together with Professor Adikwu in the interest of the university.

He added that the tradition in the appointment of vice chancellors for the university had always favoured any one of the candidates in the final 3 man list that were submitted to the council.

However, the ASUU leader denied a report that a group of lecturers have dragged University of Abuja to National Industrial court Abuja over the allegation that the appointment of the third best candidate as the Vice-Chancellor didn’t follow due process.

ASUU stated that the council reserved the discretionary right to elect anyone from the final 3 men shortlisted based on merit, irrespective of their positions in the screening exercise.

Other labour unions in University of Abuja who joined in the endorsement of the VC are; Senior Staff Academic Associations (SSANU), Non Academic Staff union of Universities (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technicians (NAAT).

Adelabu in his farewell speech thanked the whole university community for giving him the opportunity to serve them and stated that he did not award any new contract as VC at the end of his tenure as rumours has it.

He said, “How can I award a contract like that given the fact that the NEEDS assessment is involved for which tendering and opening of bid was done? It was not even by the university but by a consortium.

“The award of the contract had taken a normal process for which Council was to meet. They didn’t want me to award contracts as VC”.

The Registrar of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), Alhaji Muhammad Modibbo has denied reports that he has been sent on compulsory leave by the Governing Council of the University due to the expiration of his tenure.

He said that his tenure actually expires in August this year and nobody has the right to remove him from office before then.

UNIABUJA New VC Announcement Postponed Due To Security Reasons

The University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) community, who are eagerly awaiting the announcement of a new helmsman that will turn around its fortunes following the controversial reign of Professor James Adelabu will have to wait a while longer as the appointment of a New Vice-Chancellor for the institution has been postponed till Monday June 30th, 2014.

The university’s governing council announced that the postponement was due to the controversial security reports on some of the leading candidates contesting for the post of Vice chancellor, coupled with late submission on other contenders.

A senior lecturer and member of the university senate who pleaded anonymity revealed that security reports on two out of the three shortlisted candidates were not too favourable, forcing the university council to call up more names from the reserve list.

It would be recalled that academic activities in the university had remained suspended since the middle of June, when a peaceful demonstration organised by the students turned violent leading to the closure of the institution indefinitely.

Meanwhile, the UNIABUJA Registrar, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Modibbo has been sent on compulsory leave by the governing council following the expiration of his tenure as it was alleged that he is openly backing one of the candidates for the post of Vice-Chancellor.

UNIABUJA ASUU Has No Reason to Justify its Action – VC

Vice Chancellor says, Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU), University of Abuja Chapter has no reason to justify its action. Salary is paid in full. How can they say I have deducted something and have diverted it somewhere?

Prof. James Adelabu, the Vice Chancellor, University of Abuja, on Tuesday said the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the institution had no reason to justify its action.

The union had on Monday embarked on an indefinite strike, accusing the vice chancellor of misappropriating the school’s funds.

It claimed that Adelabu checked-off the union dues in 2013 and refused to remit the fund to it.

It also alleged that allowances entitled to members were not paid by the authority.

However, at a news conference in Gwagwalada, FCT, on Tuesday, Adelabu denied the union’s claims. He said an allegation that he opened an account and was diverting the school funds into it was not true.

Adelabu said that the union was ignorant of the development regarding the check-off dues.

He said that there was a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education stopping all university authorities from collecting and remitting check-off dues to the union.

“ Salary is paid in full. How can they say I have deducted something and have diverted it somewhere?

“ All what the union is trying to do is just to paralyse the system,’’ he said.

Adelabu said the issue of white paper the union raised was not a local matter, and that he had no idea of the report.

He, however, said that students who were to go for industrial work experience after their examination were currently taking their papers.

“The Integrity Group of ASUU and me will supervise the exams. “

The institution has two bodies under the union. There is the ASUU Integrity and ASUU Splinter. The ASUU splinter is the group on strike,’’ Adelabu said.

He said that the integrity group had earlier resolved that the reason for the strike by the union was flimsy and not in tandem with acceptable principles and ideology of unionism. (Daily Times)
