Former OAU SUG President Graduates After 13 years

When Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife former Student Union Government (SUG) President, Akinola Saburi was admitted in the year 2000, he had no feeling that he would not graduate on a record time. His involvement in campus activism was what held him on campus for additional eight years.

All started in 2003 when he was elected as the Secretary General of the students’ union and along the line, he became an acting president of the union when the incumbent president, Akinkunmi Olawoyin, was sick and could not perform his official duties again.

Saburi’s administration was said to be in constant face-off with the school authority on issues bordering on students’ welfare.

The union, according to investigations, always demanded from the authority to put things like accommodation problem, high tuition fee, overcrowded lecture rooms and hostels as well as policies they considered oppressive in the right perspective so as to make their studentship a worthwhile experience.

And at a time when there was no positive response, the students embarked on protests and the management fingered 13 of them as ring leaders including Saburi and consequently expelled them from school.

The students challenged their expulsion at the Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, and the court ordered their reinstatement pending its judgment.

“But when we got back to school, we were advised to plead with the authority to reinstate us fully and this was granted on the condition that we must withdraw the case from the court,” Saburi, from Yewa North Local Government area of Ogun State, recalled. And after the pardon, according to him, some of them bowed out of unionism but Saburi and a few others did not.

So in 2006, Saburi popularly known on campus as “Malcom X” contested again for the office of the president of the union and one hour to conclude the election and announce the results, the school authority came up with a release circulating round the campus that Saburi was still on suspension.

Expectedly, the students’ union objected to this position, arguing that such explanation was too late since Saburi had already done his course registration, issued a valid student’s identity card and contested the election.

And because the students refused to dance to the tune of the authority, a fresh expulsion order was slammed on him and to enforce this, Saburi was arrested by the officers of the State Security Service (SSS) and arraigned the following day at a magistrate court on a 10-count charge.

Saburi left the detention exactly on March 12, 2008 and was at home for one year and one month before he was recalled by the school authority to continue with his studies. Saburi was asked to write an apology letter to the authority and provide guarantor letters from a first class traditional ruler, a senior lecturer and a student leader on what they called “his good conduct” before he would be allowed back in school.

Saburi returned in 2010 and he still spent another three years due to the prolonged 2012 nationwide lecturers’ strikes and the students protest on campus.

He came out of the university with Second Class Lower, the grade that is considered to be for above average students at OAU.

“I am happy to be graduated eventually while at the same time, I have no regret whatsoever over my actions. I considered my punishment as a sacrifice for a better tomorrow,” he said.

No Going Back On New School Fees Says OAU's VC

Vice Chancellor of OAU, Prof Bamitale Omole, who addressed journalists in Ile-Ife town, Osun State, said that the increase in the charges was inevitable if the institution was to attain the international standard.

He said that the current economic reality could no longer accommodate students paying as little as #7,000 per session, hence the regime of a minimum of over #60,000 per fresh student.

He also disclosed that the inflation that has eaten deep into the university’s allocation from the Federal Government has made the charges paid by the students in the last ten years unsustainable, hence the need for the new charges.

In the analysis given by the Vice Chancellor, the Faculty of Arts, Administration, Education, Social Sciences and Law which before now was paying 5,300 Naira for old students would begin to pay 19,700 and fresh students would pay 43,700.

For Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy and Health Sciences, it has moved from 12,800 to 33,700 while fresh students would be required to pay 57,700. (Channels) That of Faculty of Science from 7,800 has become 30,700 and fresh students are to pay 54,700.

In all these, the University said that it was however not oblivious of indigent students and the Senate had made adequate provision for it by setting up a Student Education Relief Committee to provide scholarships and grants for this set of students.

This explanation, however, does not seem to go down well with the student leadership. They still want the charges to be reduced.

OAU Crisis: Our Fees Are Moderate, Considerate —Management

Reacting to the students’ protest over the new fees, the management of OAU, on Wednesday argued that the newly introduced tuition fees were moderate and considerate.

In a press statement signed by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the institution, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, OAU stated that; “we deem it necessary to inform the general public, particularly the parents and guardians of our students that the authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has been most compassionate in taking all factors that would enhance the teaching of sound practical academic knowledge into consideration before arriving at the present moderate adjustment of our charges.

“It remains incontestable that OAU, rated the best university in Nigeria for the third time running by the Spain-based Webometric Ranking International had, before now, been charging what some people regarded as ridiculous and unrealistic fees, despite maintenance of solid academic standard which OAU is noted for all over the world.

“It is, therefore, pertinent to state categorically the fees being paid by our students in relation to their courses and faculties. For instance, the total amount each of the students paid per session in the Faculties of Administration, Arts, Education, Law and Social Sciences had been N5,300; their counterparts in Sciences paid N7,800; those in Agriculture, Technology, Environmental Design and Management paid N10,300, while those in Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Dentistry and Pharmacy paid N12,800. Aside the fact that more than 93 per cent of them use hot plates, boiling rings and pressing irons, which consume electricity, the accommodation fee, had been N2, 590 per session.

“From the foregoing, it is now clear that the present socio-economic situation in Nigeria has made it totally impossible for us to sustain being the best and the cheapest in Africa. Factors like the high cost of education, dwindling subvention from the Federal Government by over 50 per cent, astronomical inflation which has eaten deep into our meager resources and electricity bills are responsible for the present adjustment of fees,” the statement added.

Ooni of Ife Mediates in OAU Students/Management Crisis over Hike in Tuition Fees

As the demonstration embarked on by the students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife over hike in tuition fees entered its second day on Wednesday, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, has expressed his readiness to mediate between the aggrieved students and the management of the institution.

Oba Sijuwade, who spoke through the Adimula of Ifewara, Oba Hezekiah Adeniyi-Owolola, promised to prevail on the managment of the OAU to reverse its decision on the new tuition fees, stressing that there was need to support and encourage any measure that could enhance peace and communal harmony in Osun State.

Undeterred by the seeming hardline posture of the OAU management in reversing to the old tuition fee regime, the students, numbering over 7,000, on Wednesday stormed major streets of Ile-Ife and visited the palace of Ooni, seeking the intervention of the traditional ruler in resolving the imbroglio over the new tuition fees.

The development, which paralysed social and economic activities in the ancient city, led to traffic gridlock and trading activities in markets were halted before the students marched to the palace of Ooni to register their displeasure.

It will be recalled that the students had, on Tuesday, embarked on protest against the hike in their tuition, blocking all the major roads in the town including the Ife/Ibadan express road.

The president-elect of the students’ union of the university, Ibikunle Isaac, who led the students on the protest, contended that the students would continue with the protest until the university management reversed to the old tuition fees completely.

I Might Be Jailed or Killed As Protests against Fee Hike Continue – OAU Student Union President

The president of the Student Union of Obafemi Awolowo University, Isaac Ibikunle, has vowed to continue protests against the recent fee hike implemented by the school.

In a statement posted on Nairaland, the President, Isaac Ibikunle said there was the possibility that he might be arrested or killed in the protests, but that it would not deter him one bit.

He said,

“Greatest Ife! The Police have threatened to jail we your leaders if we proceed to protest tomorrow. They even threatened to teargas we the students!

The question is: is this order from our Professor of ‘diplomacy’, the VC or the FG? But little did they know that having at inception addressed the outrageous increment with basic democratic virtues such as diplomacy, appeal, lobbying, negotiation, among others, we are more than justified in law, morality or common sense to exercise our fundamental rights of sit-ins, occupying, picketing protest as ordained by the combined provisions of sections 39 & 40 of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2011 as amended.

Accordingly, it is my humble declaration that we remain fearless cannot be intimidated in this struggle for this is in defense of the right of the children of the poor, the downtrodden to education. Hence, dear Police, I shall prepare for my arrest tomorrow provided you will allow me come with my toothbrush & paste, pocket Bible Quran & the Autobiography of Martin Luther Jnr.

Great Ife! We shall proceed to occupy Ife metropolis as Congress have decided while we await the outcome of the meeting between the VC the Ooni-of-Ife said to have been scheduled for tomorrow by the High Chief Adeyeye Adekola Agoro!”

The university reportedly increased the fee of newly admitted students into Clinical Sciences and Pharmacy by 267 %, Humanities/Social Sciences by 322%, and increased the fee by 253% for students admitted into Sciences.
