This call was made by the President of JOPAM Foundation for the Physically Challenged, Mr Joshua Ebubedike, who said that although primary and secondary education are free in some states, it should be extended to the tertiary level.
"An average parent with a physically challenged person cannot afford the fees of sending him or her to school because of the unfriendly environment of mobility and unique needs," he said.
Ebubedike, who is also physically challenged, said he was able to acquire a degree in engineering at the university because his parents could afford sending a driver to move him around.
He noted that due to the economic situation in the country, an average parent cannot afford a private car to take their children to the lecture halls or provide special brails for the blind persons.
The president, therefore, appealed to institutions to give the physically challenged a priority when offering admissions for intending students.
