The suspect, Khalil Ahmed Bappa, who claimed to be an agent of Glo Communications Company, committed the crime in 2012 when he promised to help the victim become a Glo Ambassador through his contacts at the company.
The 29-year-old fraudster allegedly forwarded a code number to the BUK student, assuring her that she would soon be called up as one of the ambassadors and then instructed her to send some money to him as part of the facilitation process which she did.
It was learnt that the accused further told the victim to prepare for an interview trip to Glo’s Head Office in Lagos, as her name had been selected, adding that the telecommunications company had paid for her accommodation and return flight ticket.
However, the story changed on the expected day of the trip, as the accused made his victim to wait for him endlessly and even stopped answering her calls after a while and eventually switched off his phone, saying it was when she made numerous attempts to reach him, even days after, to no avail, that she realised she had been duped.
After she made a complaint at the zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Gombe, investigators swung into action and promptly arrested the fraudster.
He was charged to court on a two-count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretences, which is contrary to and punishable under Sections 1(2) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and was sentenced to 2- years in prison by, the presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Garba Umar after he was found guilty of the crime.
I hope this serves as a deterrent to those duping innocent Nigerians for one favour or another, including giving employment, getting help in the entertainment industry and most especially offering admissions.
For those who wants a quick route to success, always know that there is no easy way to do things.
