Controversy The controversy started just as the Chairman of the University Governing Council, Bullama Manu announced Mohammed’s appointment which is still pending for confirmation by the Federal Government. The outcry is hinged on the alleged breach of one of the clauses in the criteria for the selection of a vice chancellor for the institution.
National Mirror gathered that there was a clause in the selection procedure that stipulates that a candidate for the post of the VC of the university must be a specialist in one of the major departments of the institution.
It was also gathered that the appointee as a professor of history does not have the requisite science background required for the occupier of the position to lead the technology–oriented institution.
Inside sources said Professor Remilekun Odekunle who was said to have come second in the selection process and another contestant, Professor Abdu Sajo were said not to be satisfied with Kyari’s appointment.
Speaking on the development, Professor Odekunle said his confidence was in the university regulating agency- National Universities Commission (NUC)- to preserve the integrity of the university system.
“But if the agency should allow this to go, so be it. My expressed confidence is as a result of a similar incidence sometime in the past around 1999 and the commission came in to do the right thing,”
Remi said. On his part, Professor Abdu Sajou, who came third on the score sheet said his grouse was about the failure of the panel to comply with due process in selecting who occupies the office.
However, Professor Kyari has remained silent on the issue referring our correspondent to the school’s Information and Protocol Officer.
But all efforts to speak to the spokesman, Mallam Migawa Usman as at the time of filling this report were to no avail. He didn’t answer his phone calls and put it off at a time.
