NECO Postpones Common Entrance Second Test, Announces New Date

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has postponed the second selection test for candidates seeking admission into unity schools to give students that qualified for the second test more time to register.

The officer in charge of NECO, FCT, Mr Mustapha Abdul announced that the examination will now hold on Saturday, 12th July, 2014.

The supervising minister of education, Chief Nyesom Wike, had during the conduct of the Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) for unity schools on April 26, disclosed that NECO would conduct another test for candidates who passed the examination to select the best for admission into Federal Government Colleges based on merit.

Over 40,000 candidates has been shortlisted to take part in the second selection test whose registration is still on-going.

NECO Transfer Officers, Examiners Over Question Paper Leakage

Following the reported leakage of question papers in the ongoing Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) organized by the National Examination Council (NECO), the exam body have decided to transfer all state officers and examination administrators (exam supervising officers) in order to stop menace of examination malpractice in the exam.

The board had earlier postponed the Mathematics, Biology and Economics papers due to the leakage of the qeustions before the exam date.

This transfer, according to the NECO administrators, will only be effected at the ongoing June/July SSCE as the staff are expected to return to their posts at the end of the exam.

A NECO official, Dr.Eke Anyeamachi said: “The council is worried about the increasing cases of examination malpractice during exams, hence the resolve to swap the affected officers in order to end the practice”.

He also denied that the council staff plans to embark on strike saying it is the work of detractors not staff of NECO.

NECO Candidates Lament Extortion From Officials During Exams

The National Examinations Council (NECO) examination that is going on has been marred by allegations of extortion by teachers and some officials of the examination body as they were asked to pay extra charges to write exams in Bayelsa State.

Candidates writing the NECO exam at Bishop Dimieari Grammar School, Yenagoa, alleged that they paid N500 each to the school management as “examination number allocation fee” which is outrageous. This ugly situation was discovered by the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Desmond Agu, when he paid a surprised visits to the school to know how the exam is going.

One of the candidates who was seen outside as the English examination was going on made the disclosure after serious questioning by the commandant.

“I don’t have N500 to pay for my exam number. I have so far paid N300 but l was asked to pay the rest before sitting for the English Language exam”, said the candidate.

The NSCDC commandant ordered the examiners to give the candidates the exam question paper and also advised the candidates to henceforth stop paying additional charges to the school authority.

He gave them his telephone number in case of further disturbance from the school.
