President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the siting of a Federal Polytechnic in Akwa Ibom State.

The Federal institution which already has a Rector posted to flag of academic activities is sited at Ukana in Essien Udim Local Government Area.

The Minister for Education, Barr Nyesom Wike, droped the hint in Uyo when he presented a letter to the effect from the federal government to Governor Godswill Akpabio at Government House, Uyo.

He announced that the campus gate will be thrown open for the commencement of academic activities in September this year.

Already, the Independence High School, Ukana, is to serve as the take off campus of the Federal Polytechnic since the school was selected as a result of infrastructure on ground.

A take-off grant of N1Billion has been released by the federal government for the take-off of the federal polytechnic in Ukana. It would be recalled that the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Education, Hon. Farouk Lawan had hinted during a public function in the state that a Federal College of Education was in the pipe line for the state and that his committee was working with relevant government bureaucracy to make that a reality for the state.

The establishment of the Federal polytechnic brings to three the number of federal government onwned higher institutions in Akwa Ibom state.

The list includes, University of Uyo, Maritime Academy, Oron, which is in the process of transiting to a full fledge Maritime University, and the newly established Federal Polytechnic in Ukana.

However, it is hoped when the proposed Federal College of Education comes on stream, Akwa Ibom will have four federal academic higher institutions.
