RUGIPO Students Protest Shuts School

According to the protest by the students of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO), Owo over school fees hike, the authorities of the institution has ordered the closure of the school for two weeks to avoid escalation.

The students were protesting the increase in their school fees from which a break-down showed that the Ordinary National Diploma (OND) students are now to pay N73,000 while Higher National Diploma (HND) students are to pay N90,000 instead of N65,000 and N70,000 respectively.

The protest which started as a peaceful march later turned violent as the students vandalised structures included the girls hostel building, the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) of a new generation bank, the bank’s signpost and some other billboards. The students rejected the management’s decision to prevent those that didn’t pay their school fees from writing a unified test as they locked lecturers out of their offices.

Rugipo joins the flurry of tertiary institutions
that are hiking their schools fees without considering the students and parents on affordability.

Meanwhile, the government is claiming that education is for all in Nigeria.

The management of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO), Owo hereby invite applications from suitably qualified candidates for admission into ND and HND (Full Time/ Part-Time) Programmes for the 2014/2015 academic session.

The scratch card for the registration can be obtained in the under-listed banks and post-offices on payment of Ten Thousand Five Hundred Naira (N10,500) only:

Post-Offices in Ondo, EKiti, Lagos, Osun, Edo, Oyo States, Abuja, Port-Harcourt and Higher Institution Consultancy Centre (HICC) office behind the Directorate of Academic Affairs of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo.

Application Closing Dates:
Coaching/Extra-Mural classes, Post-Graduate Diploma and professional courses will close on 3rd October, 2014.
ND Part-Time(PT) and HND Part-Time(PT and Full Time will close on 22nd August, 2014.

Screening Test: The screening tests for ND PT, HND PT and HND FT will hold on Tuesday, 16th September, 2014 at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo by 9.00am prompt.

The candidates that apply for HND Programme in the Departments of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Office Technology and Management and Electrical Engineering will write the Computer Based Test.
